Midsummer – the summer solstice festival
Long since in Ukraine the Sun was considered high and bright deity. It was called affectionately by Dazhdbog, i.e. God, the life giver, the God of light and goodness, in the face of which run all the dark and evil forces. That is, the ancient Slavs believed that they are the grandchildren of the Sun. And the author of “Word about Igor’s regiment” also calls the people Degdbgie grandchildren. Ancient Ukrainians, like other peoples of the world, were sun worshipers. They sang hymns to the Sun, created legends about him, sacrificed flowers, fragrant herbs, fruits and berries, turned to him with prayers.
The sun as the Supreme God, built on Russia temples-temples, which put the wooden image of the Sun — idols. Day and night the priests kept the sacred fire before the statues dazhdbog. People believed that the need to appease the Sun with prayers and songs, then it will be favoured them, to send a good and bountiful harvest. But if I get angry, I will send evil on people — drought, heat, hunger, misery. Therefore, during the year, spent the holidays in honor of the Sun. The most important ones: Midsummer and Christmas Carol.

The ancients noticed that the Sun affects the seasons. Him as the Supreme God, they were given control over the world. The Sun has the magic keys to heaven’s gate and releases to the ground then spring, then summer, then autumn, then winter. How was the Sun ancient Ukrainians? Of course, such men and women. In legends and fairy tales the Sun is depicted as a wise husband with clear face, whose rays illuminate the whole world. He lives on the edge of the world, and in the morning wearing a Golden robe, full of light and warmth, and goes to heaven. In Christmas carols, on the contrary, the sun acts as a maiden. The moon is often represented as the husband of the Sun. Stars — their children.
In June gather the first honey, so the June full moon is called the honey month. Our ancestors believed that the summer solstice (June 20-22) the most favorable for conception.

So now many people the solstice is associated with the pagan rites of worship of the forces of nature and spirits, in particular, with the worship of the Sun and predictions. The Midsummer traditions include such rituals as the gathering of medicinal herbs, ignition lights, swimming or affusion, weaving wreaths, divination and holiday treats. According to Christian tradition, this holiday is celebrated 2 weeks later John’s day, the Day of Ivan Kupala (St. John the Baptist). The day is named after the prophet John the Baptist.
